This beautiful run in the San Gabriels is steep in history.  From Lake Street we start up the Sam Merrill Trail to Echo Mountain, where we can see the remains of Echo Mountain House, The Chalet, the zoo, and the Incline railway up to White City.  Then we wind up the dismantled railway for the self-guided tour.  It includes the Horseshoe Curve, Cape of Good Hope, Grand Circular Bridge, Granite Gate, and finally to Ye Alpine Tavern--From 1893 through 1936, this complex was visited by approximately 3 million guests.  After 3 devastating fires on the mountain, Thaddeus Lowe was finally bankrupt in 1936, and we can only visit the scars of the hill.  As we gradually climb up to Mt. Lowe Campground, please view the placards to view how the railway was a century ago.  Then we will descend Middle Sam Merrill Trail to Inspiration Point closing the loop and then finishing 2.5 miles to the car--Wahoo!
