Backbone--Leg #1 Will Rogers Park to Schueren Road

From Will Rogers State Park we ascend the Backbone Trail with ocean glimpses of the Santa Monica Bay. The continuation to the Hub will next connect via Eagle Springs Road and Musch Trail. After refreshing-up at Trippet Ranch, we casually descend the Dead Horse Trail. After the lush Hondo Canyon, we take one last ascend to the top--finishing the first leg--with a view of the Santa Monica Bay and Catalina Island and the horizon is almost at the curvature of the earth. Beautiful! After one short trail to Schueren Road -the Fossil Ridge trail- there are fossils embedded into rocks seen at the right. Our first Bacbone trail section ends at the top of Stunt.
 
MEETING LOCATION: That morning, we will be meeting at the fork of Schueren Road and Stunt Road and we will carpool from there at 6:30 AM with the fewest cars possible to our start at Will Rogers State Park.

Backbone Leg #E--Mishi Mokwa Pk. Lot to Ray Miller

This will be your favorite leg of all. After reaching Sandstone Peak--the highest peak at 3,111 ft. of the Santa Monica Mountains, we traverse through the Chamberlain Rock. Finally, we finish the best views of the glimmering Pacific Ocean below the Ray Miller Trail.

Backbone Leg #D--Kanan Road to Mishi Mokwa Parking Lot

This is a very lush area for the early part of the leg, and we allow us to experience Zuma Canyon and Trancas Canyon.  Many of us have not seen this area, and  this is an opportunity to see this leg.  The trail ends at the Mishi Mokwa parking lot.

That morning, we need to drive to the Mishi Mokwa parking lot first and at 7:20 AM we'll take as fewest cars to the start.
 

Backbone--Leg #C Tapia Park to Kanan Road

Leaving up Tapia Park we climb up the Mesa Peak Motorway (steep long trail).  Then from the Corral Canyon parking lot, we run to the parking lot at Kanan Road--the end of the 3rd leg.   

Drive at the speed limit up Kanan Road from PCH, and after going through a tunnel, the parking lot is at the left.  Watch your speed on Kanan Road with RADAR.  Then our fewest cars will leave at 7:10 AM to the start.

Backbone--Leg #B Old Topanga Road to Las Virgenes and Piuma

Climbing the lush Hondo Canyon, we will ascend to the top of Schueren Road--with a view of the Santa Monica Bay and Catalina Island and you can see scan the curvature of the earth. Beautiful! Just before to Schueren Road, watch for the fossils embedded into rocks at your right. A short distance to 2,805 ft. Saddle Peak will start with a beautiful ocean vista.  After a long descend to Piuma Road, and 1/4 mile to Las Virgenes with our cars.

Backbone--Leg #A Will Rogers to Old Topanga Road

Then we carefully cross Topanga Road and circuitously reach to Old Topanga Road.

This course runs in the Cleveland National Forest and begins at 5,375 ft and finishes at 3,715 ft.  We will pass through varied pine forests, oaks, ferns, rocky canyons, and even cactii.  This will be a very tranquil setting with the streams and rock formations along our run.  Accomodations the night before the run can avail campgrounds (tents) or a hotel., and some will make it the weekend.

Saddle Peak will start with a beautiful ocean vista.  After a long descend to Piuma Road, we cross Malibu Canyon Road and climb up the Mesa Peak Motorway (steep long trail).  Then from the Corral Canyon parking lot, we run to the parking lot at Kanan Road--the end of the 2nd leg.
