Chantry Flats to Mount Wilson “Father’s day”

Chantry Flats to Mount Wilson “Father’s day”

MOUNT WILSON – Elevation 5,713′ (1,741 m)

We’ll kick off our Club “Southern California Six-Pack of Peaks challenge with the lowest of the six peaks. Mt. Wilson is not a stranger for us. See run/hike description below.

One of the best runs in the San Gabriels. Passes through chaparral-coated slopes with expansive canyon views, lush conifer forest and streamside woodland, sampling the grandeur of the Big Santa Anita watershed. We will climb from Chantry Flats up Winter Creek with 360′ views to Mt. Wilson, then we have 2 options:
– For a total of 15.5 miles you take the Rim trail and the Gabrielino trail and go down Sturtevant Trail to finish the loop back at Chantry. Link to Strava map
– For a total of 12.5 miles you take the Sturtevant trail after you walked by the museum and take that straight down back to Chantry. Link to Strava map

If this is still too much for you, you can take the trail to Mt.Zion and make it a 9 mile loop. Link to Strava map

DRIVE TO THE BOTTOM OF HILL, “Santa Anita Ave/Arno Drive” by 6:00 AM.  Google map link here. to meet up and carpool to the Chantry parking lot.

(From there it’s another 15-20min. drive to the parking area)
We meet to carpool at the bottom of this hill at the last residential street on your right before the yellow gate to Chantry Flats rd –the intersection of Santa Anita Avenue and Arno Drive.

From there we will carpool to the top at Chantry Flat. Parking is limited at the very busy Chantry Flats parking area and an “Adventure Pass” for the “Angeles Forest” is needed to park at Chantry Flats!
