Kanan Backbone TH onto the Backbone trail West
This is an out & back and you can go as far or as short as you’d like. Some of us will run to the Encinal gate (4.9 miles out), others will cross the road and run all the way to Etz. Melloy motorway, others will even go farther. Just remember you still need to run back!

This run introduces us to a very nice and run-able section of the Backbone Trail. The trail heads toward Encinal Canyon under a canopy of trees. It is a very well maintained single-track trail. Then, we rise from the canyon to the intersection with Encinal Canyon Road, then head back to the start or keep going. The trail is well-maintained, sparsely used and a joy to experience.
(ATTENTION: at this moment the current trail condition is an unknown for me since the fire and following rain storms.)
Distance is like you wish:
- Turning around at Encinal Canyon rd will give you a total of 10 miles.
- You can keep going by crossing the road, entering the big parking lot and pick up the trail again in the far upper left corner, there you have another mile to Mulholland rd., turning around there gives you a total of 12 miles.
- You can keep going here also, cross the road and go for another 2.7 miles until you reach the Etz. Melloy fire rd. This is another good place to turn around and retrack your steps back to your car, going this far will give a very nice and gentle 17.5 mile run.
The Kanan Dume Trailhead is reached by turning east on Kanan Dume Road off PCH. Go 4.7 miles and turn left into the parking lot just after the tunnel.
