*SATURDAY* Rocky Peak trail head to Chumash/Hummingbird loop
Mileage: 12.6 miles
Total elevation gain: +3,080 ft
*Moved our Sunday run to Saturday because of the wet winter weather, so far weather forecast is promising a dry morning with rain coming in just past noon! Temps are on the low side so dress warm!*
Starting at the Rocky Peak trail head. NOT OUR USUAL STARTING LOCATION
We take the fire road and climb all the way to the top, which is 4.7 miles out.
There are many fossils at the top if you look for them. After enjoying the view, we track back for about 1 mile until we reach the top of the single track “Chumash trail”. We take this all the way down but don’t enter the neighborhood (as we do with our big loop). Instead we stay to the left and skirt the park until we can pick up the Hummingbird trail that will have us climbing again to the Rocky Peak fire road. From there we back track to our cars.
OPTION: if the loop is too much for you, just turn back after you reached the peak at 4.7 miles (or earlier if you want) and stay on the fire road to make it back to your car. This will give you 9.5 miles with a lot of elevation gain and wonderful views.
